Watering guide

Water smarter, not harder

A few practical habits — and the right gear — go a long way toward a healthier lawn. No magic numbers, just sensible watering.

01

Water early, water deep

Aim for the early morning, before the heat. A longer, less frequent soak encourages roots to grow downward, while light daily sprinkles tend to stay near the surface.

02

Match the sprinkler to the shape

Oscillating sprinklers suit rectangular lawns, impact and tripod sprinklers cover big open circles, and adjustable heads fine-tune the edges. Pick the pattern that keeps water on the grass.

03

Put water at the roots

For beds, borders and hedges, soaker hoses and drip kits deliver moisture slowly at soil level, where plants actually drink — with less landing on paths and leaves.

04

Check before you water

A simple rain gauge and a moisture meter tell you whether the soil is already damp. If it is, skip the session. A mechanical timer then shuts the water off so you never overdo it.

A quick weekly rhythm

  • Check soil moisture and the forecast before watering.
  • Soak deeply two to three times a week rather than daily.
  • Move portable sprinklers so coverage overlaps evenly.
  • Let a mechanical timer end the session for you.
  • Store hoses on a reel to avoid kinks and wear.

Every lawn is different. These are general tips, not guarantees — local watering rules and restrictions always take priority.
